Mr. Charles Jerry Harrell,89, of Moss Point, Mississippi went to be with the Lord on Sunday November 15,2020. He was born February 8,1931 in Natchez, Mississippi. He was preceded in death by his wife Betty of 46 years, his parents Charles Frank and Thelma (Hughes); his brother, Lansing Harrell, and sisters Hazel Watson and Glenn Stogner. He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Charles J. (Ramona) Harrell of Petal, Mississippi, Christopher E. (Megan) Harrell of Prairieville, Louisiana, Dr. Joseph C. (Toni) Harrell of Gulf Shores, Alabama; and daughter Chandra S. Harrell of Atlanta, Georgia. He his also survived by six grandchildren, Matthew (Stephanie) Harrell of Summit, Mississippi, Nathan Harrell, of Gulf Shores, Alabama, Chealsea and Kaleigh Harrell of Prairieville, Louisiana, Kori Harrell of Gulf Shores, Alabama, and Mirian Garcia of Petal, Mississippi. In addition, he is survived by two great- grandsons Ethan Garcia and Luke Harrell, and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He graduated from Columbia High School in 1951, Pearl River Junior College in 1956, and the University of Southern Mississippi in 1958. He was a member of Dantzler Memorial United Methodist Church and held chairmanship of several committees and was a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class. He was Sunday School superintendent and taught Sunday School and confirmation classes. He was also chairman of the Young at Heart group, where he enjoyed the covered dish suppers and fellowship. Mr. Harrell was employed as an instructor at Keesler Air Force Base, Biloxi, Mississippi. He retired in 1989 with 32 years of service. He was a member of the Mississippi Army National Guard, and his unit was activated in May 1951 during the Korean Conflict. After serving on active duty, he returned and stayed active in the guard for 33 years and retired as Lieutenant Colonel. Mr. Harrell was a member of Moss Point’s Young Men’s Business Club and served as chairman of the YMBC Coronation Ceremony Ball for 15 years. He was a scout master of Boy Scout Troop 509, coached pee-wee basketball for Moss Point Recreation Department and was Dixie Youth baseball coach where all four children played. Mr. Harrell’s hobbies were fly fishing, flower gardening, landscaping, and biking the Natchez Trace. Daylilies were his special interest, and he belonged to the Mississippi Gulf Coast Daylily Society where he served as treasurer of the club and was active in the shows at Edgewater Mall. Visitation for Mr. Harrell will be Friday November 20,2020 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at Dantzler United Methodist Church. The funeral will begin at 12:00 pm from the church sanctuary. Burial will follow in Griffin cemetery in Moss Point, Mississippi with military honors. Pallbearers will be his six grandchildren Mr. Harrell was well loved by his friends and family and will be deeply missed.
